Known as the ‘Venice of the Alps’, Annecy is a stunning picturesque town. A warren of lanes, passages and arcaded houses, below and between which flow branches of the Canal du Thiou. The houses, ringed by canal-side railings overflowing with geraniums and petunias, are incredibly beautiful.
The medieval quarter with its cobbled streets is centered around the famous Palais de L’Isle which used to be medieval prison and was built in the twelfth century. Taking up most of the island in a canal, it is the symbol of the town and is one of the most photographed monuments in all of France.
Climb up to the Château d'Annecy which dates from the 12th century and is currently a museum . From the terraces you can enjoy the panorama out across the decorated rooftops to the lake.
You will have free time to discover the town and lakeshore, or to take a scenic boat trip, and enjoy a relaxing lunch.
In the afternoon we depart Annecy for the short journey to the Gorges du Fier:
Gorges du Fier
The Fier is one of the most important rivers in the Haute-Savoie region.
Just 10 km from Annecy, the river has carved out one of the most magnificent examples of erosion by running water, the Gorges du Fier, considered to be one of the natural wonders of the Alps.
The gorges have been accessible to the public since 1869 via a footbridge 252 m long, suspended 25 m above the river.
Note: The Gorges are not suitable for wheelchair users, or those with reduced mobility. Sensible closed footwear should be worn.
We travel to/and from Annecy by autoroute.
